I couldn’t help feeling all the congratulations and warm wishes I received after sharing that I became a full-time reseller were a bit undeserving. Literally, all I did was quit my day-job. And I know that’s actually a big step, but I’ve also worried that it’s hasty or just ill-planned out.
I didn’t quite prepare to do reselling full-time. I watched a lot of videos of other full-time resellers sharing how they prepared to do reselling full-time, or what they wished they would have done, and I didn’t really implement anything. I didn’t build a 3 month saving account, I didn’t get my active listings up to X amount (they’re currently at 129 just to put things into perspective), and I wasn’t already making a full-time salary with reselling.
What I'm trying to say is that you can become a full-time reseller if you wanted to. You can quit your day-job and just put those hours into reselling. You can start now and grow your business. There's only two things I think you really need.
Success
What has been most necessary is that I believe in myself. As cheesy as that may sound, it’s really the only thing that has carried me through the transition. I’m a couple weeks in and already having doubts, but I know I already have what it takes.
I see this as a numbers game. I’m putting X amount of time and effort into Poshmark and am receiving Y profit. If I increase X, I will increase Y proportionately. So, my game plan now is to simply thrift, photograph, list, and send out offers a hell of a lot more than what I’ve been doing.
You need founded belief, though. You need to have reason to believe in yourself. Are you already succeeding at the level you’re at now? A good way to determine this is by calculating your sell-through rate. This is a percentage of how many active listings you have compared to how many are selling. My friend, Jen (A British Posher), says you should shoot for 20-30%. Here’s the formula:
Sold Listings / Active Listings x 100 = Sell Through Rate
Where are you at? If you’re at or near 20-30%, I think you already have what it takes! If you’re not quite there, take time to learn how to make better sourcing decisions.
Passion
One last thing you’ll need to become a full-time reseller is a good reason to. It’s something that was brought up in the YouTube videos I watched: determine your why. Why are you becoming a full-time reseller? It’s going to be different for everyone--perhaps you want more time to spend with your family, or maybe you’re just really passionate about the environmental impact of fast-fashion.
Really think about it, and put it down on paper. Put it out in the universe. It’s a little more than passion, but that’s close. You need passion, but passion can be elusive. Know why you’re willing to work hard for this.
You probably know this by now, but reselling is not fun and fab finds all the time. There will be 0 sales days, days you’re not feeling it, days you find nothing at the thrift store, days you spill your coffee, etc. Knowing why you’re doing this will get you through those days.
My why is something like: I want to build something for myself. I want to build a freaking empire. I want to build something that is my own, and I want to do it all on my terms. I want to have fun and spend my time doing what I love.
If you have a good reason to resell full time, and you’re already succeeding at the level you’re at, why not quit your day job and resell full-time!?
